3. to hold as an opinion; think; believe: I can't conceive that it would be of any use.
4. to experience or form (a feeling): to conceive a great love for music.
5. to express, as in words.
Conceiving an idea, a solution or a process requires a lot of imagination, some time, and some gestational hormones in the form of experience and lessons learned. Creative conception is a deceivingly difficult thing to do right. When done incorrectly it will have a short shelf-life and languish. When its done correctly, you will know it and it will resonate and tend to become a life of its own. Great concepts evolve in rather unpredictable steps or phases. Sometimes it happens quickly - almost too soon. Other times it seems to drag on and incremental progress is a battle.
When I was working on a large cloud computing campus for Baidu in China, we slogged on for days analyzing numbers, growth rates, server power consumption, and numbers of customers trying to make headway in defining the shape of the project. The client's participants were not in the room with us except for periodic updates every few hours. After several days of analysis, I decided it was time to set the numbers aside and take a more subjective approach. I drew a few sketches on the board and one of them was closely related to the shape of the bear paws on Baidu's logo. So I started translating our concept elements into this shape. When the Baidu staff came back we showed them our revised and refined sketch showing the campus in the shape of their logo. They loved it and there was an immediate emotional connection. Our task thereafter was simply to make the bear paws big (or small) enough to fit the program.
